But the world of mods is a big one, and with such a fantastic range of mods – from the beginner-friendly VV/VW devices to the mechanical mods some veteran vapers still prefer – how do you go about choosing the best vape mods?
We conducted surveys of vapers, looking at the best VV/VW mods and the best mechanical mods, and we’ve used the results to produce definitive top 10 lists of the top vape mods and box mods on the market in 2019 for these classes of device.
So which are the best vape mods and box mods for 2018/2019? Here are the top 10s.

It’s a chunky, dual 18650 box mod, but it packs a substantial punch with a 200 W maximum output and has plenty more to offer thanks to fully-stocked temperature control functionality and the Aethon chipset powering the whole thing.
The most striking thing about the BigBox Atlas is undoubtedly the design, with a resin body sporting an impressive honeycomb design, and the whole thing coming with an 810 (wide-bore) drip tip with a similar style too. Below the surface-level, though, the mod is still an impressive offering. Along with the huge 200 W maximum power output, it features TC vaping with nickel, titanium and stainless steel coils, meaning you can pretty much vape any way you want with the device. It has the same menu system as most recent Innokin devices, but it’s undeniably easy to navigate as long as you’ve used a mod before. 7 – Eleaf iStick Pico S 100 W
The original iStick Pico did a great job of balancing portability with capability, but the updated Pico S 100 W takes seventh place in this best ecig mod list for VV/VW devices. It keeps all of the appeal of the original device, but takes 21700 batteries, improves the design and boosts the maximum power output compared to the original device, while not sacrificing the compact nature of the mod.
The Pico S 100 W TC comes with the Eleaf Ello Vate tank, which is a 28 mm diameter, 6 ml capacity tank that ships with 0.15 and 0.2 ohm atomizer heads. Without the tank, the Pico S is still pretty compact, measuring just 3 and 1/8 by 2 by 1 inches, and while the tank adds to the height of the mod, it’s still up there with the most compact devices on the market.
The mod itself looks a lot like the original version, just with a stylish new design and an upgraded front panel. The OLED display screen is clear and well-presented, and it has an improved and responsive fire button positioned above it, as well as a customizable LED light below. The device takes 21700 batteries, but it does include a sleeve for compatibility with 18650 batteries if you prefer. The device can put out up to 100 W in VW mode, supports temperature control vaping with all common TC coil materials, and also works in bypass mode.
The Ello Vate tank, one of many popular sub ohm tanks on the market, has a big part to play in the performance you’ll get from the device. Thanks to the HW series coils that boost flavor and vapor, it does a great job. The 6 ml capacity of the tank is pretty substantial, and it has a convex glass section to make room for the extra e-juice. It has a top-filling design and triple airflow slots, as well as a wide bore drip tip that makes it great for cloud-chasers.
Overall, the iStick Pico S 100 W is a solid mod, balancing portability and user-friendliness with excellent performance, and for a price of $77.95 it’s pretty hard to fault.

The thing that stands out immediately about the mod is the TFT color display screen, which looks awesome and gives you a clear, at-a-glance indication of everything you need to know when you’re vaping. It has a firing bar rather than a button, and the usual two adjustment buttons are replaced with a pretty ingenious joystick-style button below the display. This makes it really easy to use even if you’re new to vaping.
The high power output is a must for most serious mods these days, and 235 W is more than enough for the vast majority of vapers. Halo’s Reactor Mega is a beast of a mod. While it doesn’t pack quite as much power as many of the other best box mods on this list, it’s in-built 5,000 mAh battery means it can keep you vaping for longer between charges than most of the competition. Halo may be most well-known for their e-liquids, but the Reactor Mega is a reminder that they can make some seriously competitive devices too.
The Reactor Mega can provide a maximum of 80W of power. With other entries on this list of the best vaping mods going beyond 200W, this might not seem like enough, but realistically most vapers don’t go beyond this in day-to-day use. It might not be the perfect mod for a cloud competition, but for everyday vaping the power output combined with the impressive battery life is a winning combination. It also offers TC with nickel (Ni200), titanium and stainless steel coils to help you avoid dry hits.
The Reactor Mega comes in a kit with the Reactor tank, a 5 ml capacity, top-filling sub ohm tank that comes with two 0.15 ohm Ni200 coils and one 0.5 ohm dual vertical coil offering. Combined, they offer great performance and a very dependable setup all-round. You can pick up the Reactor Mega for just $75.
1 – Yihi SX Mini G Class
Taking over 14 percent of the vote in our poll to earn it the title of best box mod within the VV/VW class, the Yihi SX Mini G Class is a 200W box mod with temperature control functionality from 212 to 572 °F (firing at between 5 and 200W), and a compact, ergonomic design.
The appeal of the device is much the same as that of the iPV D2, offering a full-featured vape mod in a slim design put together with comfortable operation in mind. The SX Mini G Class features a hexagon shaped firing button, making it easy to press regardless of how you hold the device, and the adjustment button – located below the display screen – is recessed to help prevent accidental presses. The result is an aesthetically-pleasing mod that is intuitive to operate.
The SX Mini G Class takes two 18650 batteries (sold separately), accessed through a coin-slot screw point on the bottom of the device. It comes with the standard array of safety features for regulated ecig mods, and you can also charge you battery through the included micro-USB connection, with the option of passthrough vaping (so you can use it while charging).
The mod will fire any coils down to 0.15 ohms in wattage mode and down to 0.05 ohms in temperature-control mode, working with pretty much any atomizer on the market when combined with the brass, spring-loaded 510 connection. The Yihi SX Mini G Class is fairly expensive, though, coming in at $219.95, but for the best vape mod on the market as voted by vapers, it’s worth spending a little more to pick it up.
Best Mechanical Mods
Now we move onto the best mechanical mods. Although they’ve been falling out of favor thanks to the proliferation of regulated, high-power VV/VW mods, our mechanical mod poll actually received more responses than the VV/VW mod poll, and mechanicals are well worth consideration for anybody shopping for the best ecig mod for their needs.
10 – Tiny Vape by Demon Killer
Mechanical mods in the traditional style are much harder to find these days, but direct voltage output devices like the Demon Killer Tiny Vape have swooped in to take their place in the market. Running off an 800 mAh internal battery and putting out the raw voltage just like a traditional mech, the Demon Killer has a top-mounted OLED display screen and a tiny size of just three inches tall. It might not be the chunkiest mech on the market, but with a cool design and two-post RDA included as standard, it’s a solid option for the price of $42.95.
9 – Stentorian RAM BF Squonk Box Mod by Wotofo
Many mechanical mods on the market today come in the form of squonkers. While the market for ordinary mechs has reduced with the widespread availability of high-power regulated devices, squonkers require more space in the body to hold a bottle of e-juice and makes a stripped-down mech much more useful. Wotofo’s Stentorian RAM BF is a cool-looking squonker box mod, running on a single 18650 battery and incorporating a 7 ml juice bottle into its body. It has 24k gold-plated contacts for exceptional conductivity and a spring-loaded pin so making connections is easy. The fire button has a safety lock to protect against accidental activation, and the device works as a pure mechanical mod. It’s priced at $52.95, which makes it a great deal as well as a top-end performer.
8 – Luxotic NC 250W by Wismec
The Luxotic NC 250W from Wismec isn’t a typical entrant on this best ecig mod list for mechanical devices, because it does allow you to adjust the output voltage by twisting a dial on the front of the mod. It might not be a mech technically, but it hits like one and differs from regulated devices in many ways.
It runs on two 20700 or 18650 batteries (the latter with the help of two included sleeves), and the device features a switch on the top that allows you to choose between series and parallel arrangement. It has an alloy metal and resin body, giving it a stylish but distinguished look, and does include the sort of protections you’d expect from regulated devices.
It comes with the Guillotine V2 RDA, which has a horizontal two-post build deck, a 6 mm juice well, an optional bottom-feeding pin and dual-slotted side or bottom airflow. For the price of $74.95, the device is a great deal, especially if you want something like a mech with some of the features of a regulated device.
7 – Glas Signature by Glas Vapor
The Glas Signature by Glas Vapor is one of the best mech mods on the market today, but it’s a very different beast to the devices covered by this list so far. Not only is it a true, pure mechanical mod, this thing is a work of art.
Everything made by Glas Vapor is hand-made in Los Angeles, using only the very highest-quality materials, including aerospace grade stainless steel, titanium, silver, rhodium and even sapphire crystals. The buttons – mounted on the bottom of the device, with a beautifully smooth throw – are made from custom-tooled aluminum.
The Signature is an 18650 mechanical tube mod, pretty much in the same vein as the others from the mod maker: it looks beautiful and the high-quality materials used give it minimal voltage drop and a solid hit. The Signature version costs $325 direct from Glas Vapor.
6 – Caravela by Caravela Mods
The Caravela is the original “unicorn” mod: the mythical mod that everyone wants but very few can get their hands on. Not much has changed, except now some vapers are willing to pay much more to get their hands on one. Simply put, it's one of the most legendary vape mods in the industry.
The Caravela is a 22 mm diameter, mod with a stainless steel or brass tube (in 18350, 18500 or 18650) – all featuring the iconic ship logo – silver-plated contact pins, a reverse-threaded locking ring, an adjustable, recessed 510 contact point and a stainless steel button. The device looks elegant and sleek, with every one bearing a unique serial number, and the build quality is nothing short of exceptional.
Finding a real Caravela is pretty much impossible, though, so the only options are clones. You can pick up a clone from Gypsy Vapes, on sale at time of writing for $34.95 (usual price $69.95).
5 – Nemesis by Atmomixani
The Nemesis is a mechanical mod from Atmomixani, taking over 4.6 % of the vote in our mechanical mod poll and comfortably ranking as one of the top vape mods on the market.
The Nemesis features silver-plated brass contacts, an adjustable center pin, delrin insulators, an in-built airflow control, and comes in the standard three tube sizes, each accommodating a kick. The bottom pin is also adjustable, so you can tweak your throw to your liking. And it goes without saying that the performance and build quality of the device is pretty exceptional, with a very low voltage drop and a solid hit.
It comes in matte or polished stainless steel or copper, as well as brass, all of which look sleek and elegant, and bear the iconic angel of death logo. It’s currently available from Atmomixani for between $153 and $165, depending on your chosen finish, but there are also plenty of clones on the market.
4 – Fush Protected Tube Mod by Acrohm
The Fush Protected Tube Mod is another entrant onto this best mods for vaping list for mechanical mods that doesn’t strictly meet the traditional definition of a mechanical mod. The key difference here is that there are protections built-in, including a minimum atomizer resistance of 0.07 ohms and short circuit, high temperature, low voltage and reverse polarity protections.
Other than that, though, it’s a purely mechanical mod vaping experience. It’s a tube mod – composed of a mix of bulletproof polycarbonate and 304 stainless steel – that runs on a single 18650 battery and outputs the remaining voltage directly, with a recessed firing button. It’s very much a next-generation mechanical device, maintaining the benefits of the originals while still offering some of the protections of regulated devices. You can pick it up for $99.99.
3 – REO Grand by REO’s Mods
The REO Grand is a mechanical box mod that’s built like a brick and runs on a single 18650 battery. The device took almost 9 percent of the vote in our best vaping mods poll for mechanicals, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Not only does the REO Grand have a sturdy build – milled out of a single block of aluminum, it seems virtually indestructible – it can hold a 6 ml bottle of e-juice right inside its body.
The REO Grand features an adjustable stainless steel 510 connection, copper, beryllium and gold-plated contacts and a high-heat plastic push-button to fire it, with a magnetically-closed door covering the slot for the battery and your bottle of juice. It looks pretty awesome too, and is available in tons of different colors. To get the most out of the on-board bottle of e-juice, you need an atomizer that can be filled from the bottom, but even without one you get a hard-hitting mechanical box mod. The device costs $155 direct from the manufacturer.
2 – LiftBox Bastion by Innokin
The LiftBox from Innokin is another squonker that makes this best vape mod list in the mechanical class, but it’s different from most squonkers on the market. The big selling point here is the Lift Siphon System, which automatically soaks your coils after each puff, so like a squonker but without the manual squonking.
The device itself has an unregulated output from a single 18650 battery, and works with a squeeze-to-vape firing bar. It does come with safety features, though, including a minimum resistance cutoff of 0.08 ohms, short circuit protection, battery safety protection and reverse polarity protection. When paired with a bottom-feeding RDA, though, it works as well and hits as hard as pretty much any mech on the market. The device costs $89.95.
1 – Templario Mod by Pedro Miguel
The Templario Mod took over 14.4 percent of the total vote in our top vape mods poll for mechanicals, making it the top-voted mechanical mod by a convincing margin.
The Templario Mod is a 22 mm diameter brass-bodied device, and can be bought in 18350, 18500 and 18650 tube sizes. It features a hybrid-style top, a magnetic button (which uses neodymium) and two large vent holes towards the bottom. The button sits flush to the bottom of the device, and has a nice smooth throw.
It must be said that the Templario is a beautiful mod, with an elegant design that screams quality and a top-class build, featuring an enamel shield with a red ruby cross and the name of the mod below it, along with a sword engraving and the signature of the mod-maker engraved on the opposite side. Pretty much every piece of the device is also engraved with the unique serial number for the device: from 0 to 249. The whole thing comes in a wooden case, bearing a plaque and adding to the air of quality.
That should tell you just how rare the device is, and will give you a clue that it isn’t going to come cheap. The Templario is for sale at between 220 and 255 Euros, or between $250 and $290, but you have to add yourself to a list to pick one up, and they’re only released periodically. The iTaste MVP series from Innokin has long been a favorite of vapers, and the original really brought box mods into the mainstream. The fourth version has a 4,500 mAh internal battery, and a maximum power output of 100 W. It has a full-featured temperature control system, a clear OLED display screen and a 0.1 ohm minimum resistance. The device charges at an impressive 2 A, and – like the older versions – doubles as a power pack. You can pick it up for $57.95.
2 – Innokin Coolfire Ultra TC150 Express
The Coolfire from Innokin is their second entry onto this list of our favorite vapor mods, but the device really knocks it out of the park. With a 4,000 mAh internal battery and a maximum power output of 150 W, it’s hard to imagine anybody being disappointed with what it can do. It has a less boxy design than the MVP 4.0, but still features the responsive Aetheon chipset and handles TC vaping with stainless steel, titanium and nickel coils. It’s available for $56.95.

It runs on two 18650 batteries, and has a dial on the side you can use to adjust the output voltage from 2 to 6 V. If you want to run your batteries in series, you can do this by changing the circuit board for the alternative included with the device. It has some basic protections, which again is an advantage over traditional mechs, but still hits hard without unnecessary complications. You can pick it up for $34.95.
4 – Smok Stick V9 Max
This is a fairly basic-looking device but the performance is hard to fault. This is another example of a mod that works like a mech – with a direct voltage output and no extraneous features – but has safety features that technically makes it a regulated device. The mod has an internal 4,000 mAh battery, which will keep you vaping for well over a day between charges. The device comes in a kit with the 8.5 ml Stick V9 Max tank and two coils, and costs $59.99 new.
3 – Tesla Invader III 240 W
This is the last device on our recommended mechs list that doesn’t technically meet the definition, but again it offers similarly hard-hitting performance, except with the addition of some crucial safety features and a dial for adjusting the output voltage. It has a chunky, uncompromising look, and runs on dual 18650 batteries wired in series, with a minimum supported resistance of 0.1 ohm. Again, this is a basic device, so aside from the voltage dial and the fire button, the device is as simple as mods can get. It costs $44.95.
2 – Wismec Reuleaux RX Machina
The Reuleaux RX Machina from Wismec is one of our favorite vaping mods in the traditional mech style, with a basic tube design and a recessed fire button in the bottom of the mod. It runs on a single 20700 battery, with the option to use an 18650 battery with a sleeve. There are a few design options: two honeycomb options, a knurled black one and a cool, swirling metallic resin design. It has a gold-plated 510 connection, and comes in a kit with the two-post Guillotine RDA. It costs just $27at time of writing, on sale from the regular $40.50 price.

Despite the overall decline in mech mods in recent years, the best e-cigarette mod in the mechanical group is a genuine classic. The Vgod Elite Mech will be familiar to many vapers, with a black copper body and a straightforward design; it does exactly what you expect from a mech and nothing else. It runs on a single 18650 battery, and the device has vent-holes as a physical safety feature. It might not be as ornate as something like the Caravela, but it looks awesome and hits like a beast. You can buy it for $89.99.
